Abstract:
Formerly: Determination of the Solution Colour of Raw Sugars, Brown Sugars and Coloured Syrups at pH 7.0 - Official This Method is suitable for the determination of the colour in solution of raw sugars, higher colour plantation white sugars, partially refined sugars, brown sugars and coloured sugar syrups having a colour greater or equal to 250 ICUMSA Units (IU). The absorbance of a filtered solution at pH 7.0 is measured at 420 nm in a spectrophotometer. The adjustment of pH is made using either HCl or NaOH. The method has Official Status but if a choice of Method is available then ICUMSA recommends that Method GS9-8 is used preferentially. For raw sugar the absolute difference between two results obtained under repeatability conditions should not be greater than 113 IU (for sugars between 500 IU and 2000 IU) and 300 IU (for sugars between 2000 IU and 7000 IU) and under reproducibility conditions 383 IU (500 IU to 2000 IU) and 963 IU (2000 IU to 7000 IU). For brown sugars and coloured syrups the absolute difference between two results obtained under repeatability conditions should not be greater than 130 IU (for samples between 2200 IU and 2600 IU), 190 IU (for samples between 4300 IU and 5600 IU) and 1900 IU (for samples between 34,000 IU and 42,000 IU) and under reproducibility conditions 370 IU (2200 IU to 2600 IU), 1350 IU (4300 IU to 5600 IU) and 5230 IU (34,000 IU to 42,000 IU).
