Spectrophotometric Sulphite Content in White Sugar and Plantation White Sugar using Rosaniline Hydrochloride - Official (Reference)

Abstract:
The sulphite content in white and plantation white sugar is determined. The colour of a sulphite/rosaniline complex formed is measured at 560 nm and compared to a standard curve previously prepared. The method has Official (Reference) Status for white sugar. For white sugar samples with sulphite content between 4.2 mg/kg and 27.6 mg/kg the typical average difference between two results obtained under repeatability conditions should not be greater than 3.2 mg/kg and under reproducibility conditions should not be greater than 11 mg/kg. For plantation white sugar samples with sulphite content between 3.1 mg/kg and 14.8 mg/kg the repeatability range determined by SLMV was (0.1 to 0.5) mg/kg.
