Abstract:
This Method is applicable only to crystalline white sugars and is used to determine the visual grade of white sugars in colour-type units. The sample is visually compared to standards representing Braunschweig colour-types on a scale from 0 to 6 using a viewing cabinet. The Method is often used as part of an evaluation of white sugar quality characteristics and is most suited to sugar with a mean aperture (MA) of (0.5 to 1.0) mm. It is unsuitable for white sugars with inhomogeneous crystal distributions (e.g. sugars with damaged crystals), large (e.g. coarse sugar) or very small (e.g. powdered sugars). The Method has been shown to give a repeatability standard deviation for colour-type unit of ±0.109 and a reproducibility standard deviation for colour-type unit of ± 0.183.
