Abstract:
This determination of dextran (high molecular weight glucose polymer) is carried out by measuring the haze formed when alcohol is added to a solution of cane raw sugar, cane white sugar or plantation white sugar containing such polymer. The turbidity of the haze is measured by spectrophotometry at 720 nm, standardised against solutions of defined dextran content. For raw sugars the absolute difference between two results obtained under repeatability conditions should not be greater than 40 mg/kg and under reproducibility conditions not greater than 80 mg/kg. For cane white sugars and plantations white sugars, the absolute difference between two results obtained under repeatability conditions should not be greater than 20 mg/kg and under reproducibility conditions not greater than 40 mg/kg.
