Unfortunately I have to start this ICUMSA News on a sad note. A few
weeks ago, our dear friend Prof. Dr. Rud Frik Madsen passed away. He
was an active participant in the work of ICUMSA. He was the Chairman
of ICUMSA News right up until last year’s meeting in Pune and was devoted
to his role which he carried out with enthusiasm and devotion. A short
obituary, sent to us by Mr. Hansen, Chairman of the Danish National
Committee, has been included at the end of this issue of ICUMSA News.
For those of you who would like to read more about Dr Madsen’s career
you may also like to refer to page 218 of our book “The History of ICUMSA
– The first 100 Years”.
We have now completed the collection and collation of discussions and
Recommendations for all ICUMSA Subjects. This work has been finished
a bit later than expected but I am sure you will understand why this
is the case. All of the discussions were posted on the ICUMSA web site
and National Committees were invited to add their opinions on the Recommendations
proposed. Voting has now finished and all of the proposed Recommendations
have been accepted with the percentage of votes in favour ranging from
55 to 75% of the votes cast. Details of the results of voting will be
added to the web site and they will be sent to the Chairmen of National
Committees in due course. We are grateful for the constructive comments
of some National Committees who have pointed out some minor contradictions
between some of the proposed Recommendations. As a result of these comments
we have made slight changes to the text of some Recommendations without
changing their overall content. The final Recommendations, together
with the discussions of the various Subjects and the final text of the
Reports, will be published in the Proceedings of the 23rd Session in
Pune. Proof copies are already ready and I am pleased to announce that
it is possible to order your copy now by using the enclosed form.
I am very grateful as always for the contribution of John Dutton in
the preparation of changes to the methods book. We are setting up new
and revised methods which will be included in the Supplement 2003. The
supplement will be available within a few months.
National Committees have completely accepted the new structure of ICUMSA.
We have already published the new structure on the web site together
with details regarding an intermediate meeting next year in Atlanta
at the conclusion of the SPRI meeting. In order to make the organisation
of this meeting easier, we would ask all those interested in participating
to fill in the form included with this issue of ICUMSA News. You will
not be obliged to attend by sending back the form but it will give the
organisers some idea of the numbers to expect. I would like to remind
you that during the meeting in Atlanta we will have to consider many
issues which were not resolved in Pune and some which have arisen during
the discussion phase after that meeting.
We are currently considering the structure of Subjects within ICUMSA.
This is due to the resignation of some Referees as well as discussions
since the Pune meeting. We expect that there will be some substitution
and revision of the various Subjects. We have published the details
of some of these changes on the ICUMSA web site and others will follow
soon. I recommend that you visit the site regularly so that you are
up to date with the changes. Some National Committees have also sent
me the details of new Associate Referees. These details will be included
as soon as possible on our web site. I take this opportunity to ask
Referees to alter their records as soon as possible and keep the new
Associate Referees up to date with the progression of work during this
Session – particularly collaborative laboratory work.

ICUMSA is the only international organisation concemed solely with
analytical methods of the sugar industry.
Texts of the Referees' Reports are reproduced in full in the ICUMSA
Proceedings, together with Appendices consisting of method descriptions,
information on collaborative tests or reports of Associate Referees.
Also included are discussions and for each of the 23 Subjects, a list
of Recommendations finally adopted.
For those wishing to keep themselves informed about ICUMSA Methods,
the present volume is thus essential reading.

Obituary for Rud Frik Madsen
Former research director in Danisco Sugar, Rud Frik Madsen (RFM) died
this month.
RFM was born in 1930, and following his graduation in 1953 with a master’s
degree he got a job in De Danske Sukkerfabrikker (The Danish Sugar Factories)
– (later Danisco Sugar) in Nakskov.
The greatest part of his active career in Danisco Sugar was based in
the former Driftteknisk Laboratorium (now Danisco Sugar & Sweeteners
Development Center) of which he was appointed manager in 1965. For a
period starting in 1975 he also acted as manager of Nakskov Sugar Factory
as well. During the period from 1984 until his retirement in the summer
of 1995 RFM was research manager in Danisco Sugar, which also included
having an office at the head office in Copenhagen, but he always stressed
that research and development should take place in Nakskov, and he struggled
to preserve this department in Nakskov.
RFM was one of Danisco Sugar’s significant profiles, and he was very
important for the development in and of Danisco Sugar.
RFM was the initiator of several projects and inventions, which have
contributed to improving the efficiency of - and introducing cleaner
technology to the sugar production. One of the most significant projects
was the invention of the automatic bag filter for cleaning the beet
juice.
Diaphragm Filtration was an area, which interested RFM very much. He
worked with diaphragm filtration for a very long period of his life.
In 1977 he took a doctor’s degree for his thesis “Hyperfiltration and
Ultrafiltration in Plate-and-Frame Systems”. He was the architect of
the founding of the firm DDS Filtration (later DOW, DSS and now Alfa
Laval). RFM was the originator of a large number of patents.
An exiting and also somewhat exotic project was the ESA (the European
Space Agency) – a project where the task was to clean all liquid flows
in a manned spacecraft with a view to recycling drinking water. Here
– as with other tasks – RFM showed his great enthusiasm and creativity.
RFM was very active and well reputed internationally as well, and he
was member of many organisations. He had managing positions in the international
sugar organisations CITS and ICUMSA, among others.
RFM was honorary doctor at the university in Lund, Sweden, and was
a “well-qualified scientist and industrialist” honoured with the Julius
Thomsen Gold medal in 1995 at DTU.
RFM was an extremely inspiring manager, and it was exciting working
for him. He was very creative, and he had an eye for the practical details
in a task and was not afraid of getting down to it himself – he really
loved to get his hands dirty. He trusted his staff unreservedly, therefore
he delegated frequently. It was also very characteristic of RFM that
he started the informal use of first names in the organisation in Nakskov
when he became manager.
He was a great inspiration for us all in the development function.
Privately Rud Frik Madsen lived with his wife Gerda in Nakskov, and
we sympathize with Gerda and the children.
On behalf of the present and former employees of Danisco Sugar &
Sweeteners Development Center (former “Driftteknisk Laboratorium”).
