The 2002 General Assembly is now less than one year away, and, after
this issue, there will only be two other ICUMSA News editions before
this next Session.
I can now give you some further information on the next meeting in
India, so that National Committees, Referees, Associate Referees and
others can make plans to attend.
We have recently met in Ferrara with our Indian friends Mr. Kumar and
Mr. Jain.
At this meeting it was decided to hold the next Session at the Hotel
Meridien in Pune during the week 3-7 June 2002.
Thise dates have been chosen to avoid overlapping with other meetings
and for a time when we should have pleasant weather conditions in Pune.
Although our Indian friends have not yet arranged a detailed program,
or finalised the costs for registration and accomodation , i can foreshadow
that the costs will not be higher than those of the previous session
held in Berlin. National Committees and other participants can plan
their expenditure on that basis. Bearing in mind that the next issue
of ICUMSA News will be published at the beginning of January 2002, which
is quite close to the Congress, we will prepare a special page in our
website ( www.unife.it/icumsa
) so that participants wanting more detailed information in advance
of the Congress will be able to obtain it.
This information will also be published in the traditional sugar magazines
and will be mailed to the National Committees. I would like to reiterate
two important points which I have already emphasized in the last issue
of ICUMSA News.
I ask the Referees to send their Reports to me as soon as possible,
but not later than December 31, 2001,. These Reports will be included
in another page of our website , as soon as they are received, so that
they can be examined and discussed within the National Committees in
time before the Session. I would like to suggest the Referees to send
their Reports, if possible, via e-mail to my personal address: vcg@unife.it
.
I also request the few Referees, who have not given me their e-mail
addresses, to do so as soon as possible not only for updating our website
but also for making contact easier with me, the Associate Referees and
other people who would like to participate in the preparation of the
Reports.
In addition, I would like to remind the National Committees that various
appointments must be renewed or reconfirmed for the next four years,
and I am awaiting their proposals and suggestions.
23rd Session of ICUMSA - Pune (India) 2002 by Mr. V. Kumar - Sugar
Technologist Association of India We would like to draw the reader's
attention to some further information on the XXIII Session of ICUMSA
which will be held in Pune, India, from the third to the seventh of
June 2002. This is the first time that an ICUMSA Session has been held
in India. The Indian Sugar Industry's association with ICUMSA goes back
a number of years, but India has increased its contribution to collaborative
testing since 1994-95. India is the largest producer and consumer of
Sugar in the world.
The sugar production this year is expected to be 18.4 million tons
shipping from 504 sugar factories. Pune, the venue for the XXIII Session
of ICUMSA is located in the Sahyadri Hills, near the west cost of India.
It is also called the "Queen of Deccan". It is a fascinating city with
a healthy climate all year round.
During June the temperature is quite pleasant in the range 28 - 30
degrees Celcius. The city's hilly environs and salubrious climate caused
the British to make it their regional capital during the monsoon season.
Contemporary lifestyle pncludes clubs, golf courses and theatre, which
mirror the city's growing importance as a corporate business hub. The
ICUMSA Session will be held at Hotel Meridien.
The room tariff for the Meridien Hotel is USD l10/person with breakfast
& taxes for single/double occupancy. Our second choice of hotel is,
Hotel Holiday Inn, its room tariff is USD 75.00 with breakfast and taxes
for single/double occupancy.
Further details of the other Hotels in Pune and full details of the
ICUMSA Session will be circulated with the registration form. In order
to allow participation of as many delegates as possible, so that good
discussions will be held at the Session, we have kept the registration
fees to a nominal USD200 for participants and USD l00 for the accompanying
persons, which are the same fees as for the the 1998 Session held in
Berlin.
We propose to hold an exhibition in association with the ICUMSA Session.
